ABOUT

OpenKnit is an open-source, low-cost, digital fabrication tool that affords the user the opportunity to create her/his own bespoke clothing from digital files. Going from the raw material, the yarn, straight to its end use, a sweater for example, with almost no waste, because the product is knitted to shape. Designing and producing clothes digitally and wearing them can now happen in the very same place, rewarding the user with the ability to make decisions regarding creativity and responsibility.

I’m a graphic artist in Tokyo. The concept is astonishing and I fully respect!! I’m interested to get to know more about the project and get involved. I’m not sure how much it’d cost including the shipping fee, but it looks quite interesting.

hi Hiroto, thanks or your interest. subscribe to the newsletter to be updated about the project.
when I created the BOM https://github.com/g3rard/OpenKnit/blob/master/bill_of_materials.csv
I considered also the shipping costs (to Barcelona), I don’t know how is the import policy working in Japan but I guess you could get all the parts for not much more than what I specify, if not less.
there’s some japanese companies that produce (or used to produce) knitting machines so they should have knitting needles, obtaining the needles locally would probably cut down the costs.
it would be awesome if you could find an alternative source of needles in Japan, please let me know if you do, I’d love to know!
      thank you!

Hi Jesse C, It wouldn’t be easy at all, but it’s definitely one of my priorities after the overall reliability has improved and everything works smoother
      regards!

Hi, i am a maker from italy and i find amazing your machine!
my question is: how much time did you spend to build and programme the machine?
I’m asking this because i’d like to build my own one
Thanks a lot and good work!

thanks Giuliano. Building and programming this machine from scratch took me around 8 months of hard work.
Once you have all the components by you it could be assembled in a day probably.
      regards,

Hi — can you tell me which open source license you’ve released OpenKnit under? I know that Knitic is under the GPL, but I didn’t see anything specific about the OpenKnit … thanks in advance!

My Spanish friend Esteban gave me your webpage, we are both in Indonesia.

I would be interested in knowing more about this machine and software. Do we have to build the machine in Indonesia or can buy complete.

Knitarajut is a small home business in Surabaya, Indonesia. We design some knitting yarns and import branded knitting yarns and teach people how to hand knit.

    Best regards,
    Stephen.

hi Stephen, if you want to have a machine you have to buy all the components and assemble them by yourself.
the machine is not sellable since it’s still in beta version and its performance is a bit tricky, reliability has to increase quite a lot.
if you are willing to build one I’d be happy to assist you :)
      cheers!

How can one make a contribution? I am a college student so my contribution would be humble; however, I dream of having one of these machine in my home soon and I understand that your work in this area should be encourange. Open clothes construction will be a revolution; I can’t wait for the day when I am able to print my own cotton shirts ^_^ . Anyways, I want to donate, where to?

Screammmmmmmmmmming Hi Gerard! I am so excited about your project! I stumbled across your project today on youtube, as I was looking into knitting machines. And boy, what a great stumble it was!! I continued to do further research on your project an here I am! I would love to build my own machine, but where do I begin?

      thanks Ciara!
first you have to know this is a project at an early development stage, giving many troubles and demanding many tests. I you want to move further you should get the components you can find in the BOM in GitHub and 3D print the parts (the Wally120 is more advanced than the 340), soon I’ll publish an instructable along with the Waag Society about how to assemble all the parts.
      Best!

fantastic work. Please add me to your newsletter. I wouldn’t mind paying for a fully assembled model of the latest version. Or, do you have a parts kit to sell for the lazier DIYer? :+)

Thanks Tommy. Unfortunately I’m not selling anything, it’s still a prototype that changes quite often.
