Winter’14 collection

This collection was featured in the project Made In The Neighbourhood being the first open-source clothing made with a machine. These four garments are a demonstration of the potential of OpenKnit, although, more sophisticated designs/clothes will be possible, hopefully, in a near future. Join the evolution.

    HI,

We are manufacturers of affordable 3d printers in India.
    This is an amazing technology!

We would like to work with you on making this printer available to everyone in affordable way.

      Hi Swapnil,

Just knit the real way by hand. Why a machine that does all the work for you? Plus not everyone has the money for a machine. You mention machine in your blog but you don’t make one available. You should open source specs to build a machine if you want everyone to participate.

hi Biggles, I made this machine so anybody can create her/his bespoke clothes without having the technique to do it by hand. you’re right, not everybody has the money for this machine but I tried to keep the price as low as possible to exclude as less people as possible, offering a new way to people to get involved in knitting. in the HOWTO section you can find the documentation for everyone to participate, I’m working now on increasing that documentation to make it easier.
      kind regards,

Hola, ¿Hablas español? Well, greetings from México! I saw this and i think is awesome. It is possible to have a component list in spanish? Also, what skills and knowledge are need it to make this a reality?
It works with macosx, windows, linux?
I know very little about electronics and software development, but if you can point me in the right path, i can try to assemble this awesome machine :)
    Thansk in advance!

hi Jair. the component list is based in Barcelona, you should look for your local providers in México, if you have troubles getting a component let me know.
the software you need, Processing and Arduino, is free and available for macosx, windows and linux.
right now the machine is at an early stage of development so you need certain skills, basically programming with the software I mentioned before and 3d modelling. everything you need to learn is online and free.
things are going to get easier as the development move forward.
let me know if you want to build the machine or simply get started with Arduino, processing or/and 3d modelling, I’d try to point you to the right direction.
      kind regards,
      gerard

      saludos,

I am very very interested in this project, especially since I have been using a hand knitting machine (Passap DM80) since 1997, and my back hurts ;)

How do I buy the components to build one of yours? with the program, etc… very interested, I think I’m the only knitter in Miami.

Congrats! and please keep me posted on all things… very interesting.

thanks Karelle. you can get the components from these providers for example https://github.com/g3rard/OpenKnit/blob/master/bill_of_materials.csv
since I’m based in Barcelona those are the best I could find, probably you have better options around you.
do you know any needle producer in USA? finding a source of needles near you would be great, please let me know if you find something :)
subscribe to the newsletter if you want to be updated about the project.
